Effect of Saffron (Croucus sativus L.) Extract on Central Nervous System of Male Albino Rats
نویسنده
چکیده
Saffron (Croucus sativus L) has been used traditionally as a spice for flavoring and coloring preparations. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of saffron on some neurotransmitter content in the different brain regions, i.e. cerebellum, brainstem, striatum, cerebral cortex, hypothalamus and hippocampus. The daily (i.p.) administration of saffron extract (60mg/kg) for four weeks and subsequence withdrawal caused a significant increase in epinephrine (E), norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) content in all the tested brain regions at most of the time intervals studied. This is may be in a part, due to the presence of safranal which are mediated through agonized GABA and blocked calcium A channel a result the release of neurotransmitter is decreased and the content is increased. Saffron may be useful as a herbal medicine having sedative effect.

Background & Objective: The axial role of the oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of Parkinson disease has been identified. On the other hand, the learning and memory impairment in Parkinson disease has a distinguished outlook. Since Saffron has antioxidative stress effects, the aim of the present study is to investigate the improving effects of Saffron extract on the spatial memory paramet...

Saffron or Crocus sativus L. (C. sativus) has been widely used as a medicinal plant to promote human health, especially in Asia. The main components of saffron are crocin, picrocrocin and safranal. The median lethal doses (LD50) of C. sativus are 200 mg/ml and 20.7 g/kg in vitro and in animal studies, respectively. Saffron has been suggested to be effective in the treatment of a wide range of d...

Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is among the most common neurodegenerative disorders. Given the powerful antioxidant effects of the saffron extract on the removal of free radicals, this study aimed to investigate the protective effects of the saffron extract on reducing oxidative stress in a rat model of Parkinson's disease pretreated with saffron. Materials & Methods: In this experim...
